I was so intrigued to try this new topcoat from Julep as soon as I read the product description. The Freedom Topcoat promises to keep your nails shiny and chip free for days longer than regular topcoats, giving you the longevity of a gel manicure without the cost or hassle. Sounds like a dream come true! Instead of curing under a nail dryer, this topcoat cures with natural light (though they do specify that for best results to use a UV 60-watt bulb). At $18 it’s a pretty penny for a topcoat, but compared to the cost of a gel manicure it could actually be a much more cost-effective option.

Except, at least for me, it doesn’t work. At all. In fact, this has been one of the poorest performing nail products I’ve ever used. I’ve done 2 manicures with it so far, both with Julep polishes underneath. The first time I used it, this was my result about 24 hours later:

That’s not even tip wear. That’s CHIPPING. And really bad chipping at that. With that manicure I used OPI Natural Nail Base Coat underneath, so I thought to myself oh hey maybe I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and next time I’ll use the Julep base coat. So I painted my nails with Julep Marion (which is BEAUTIFUL, by the way) and ….

24 hours later my nails were even more chipped than the ones above. I didn’t even take the time to photograph it. I was pissed.

So um, yeah. Freedom Top Coat has been a huge bust and a half for me. I am going to further experiment it because I’m a masochist like that and because I’m curious…and ok, I really want super shiny nails that last a week. :( Who wouldn’t? But alas this seemed too good to be true and apparently it is.
