Okay I’m about to blind you with science. Check it.
There are a lot of products that claim to get rid of or prevent frizzy hair, but when I started reading about the products from Living Proof, I got excited. Living Proof has developed a new frizz-fighting technology called PolyfluoroEster. It’s actually the first new technology in this arena in 30 years! PolyfluoroEster works by creating a smooth surface on the hair that reduces friction between hair fibers and repels moisture– the main cause of frizz.
The coolest thing (I think) about how PolyfluoroEster works is that this coating it creates also repels things like oil and dirt. It’s like teflon protection for your hair! It actually makes it so you don’t have to wash your hair as often. This is a good thing because over-shampooing is actually a bad thing for your hair.
The Living Proof line includes a shampoo and conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, 2 types of treatments, and 4 styling products. I have been trying the shampoo and conditioner for a few weeks now to really get a feel for how they work for me and my hair. (Note: These products were provided as press samples.) I have sort of mixed feelings.
The Shampoo
I love the shampoo. I can really feel how clean my hair is after using it, but it doesn’t leave my hair thirsty and stripped, begging for conditioner. It builds a glorious lather. All the Living Proof products smell vaguely chemically and vaguely citrusy. This is a fantastic shampoo that I will definitely continue to use.
The Conditioner
The conditioner leaves me feeling a little lukewarm. It’s not bad, but I don’t feel like it’s quite hydrating enough. The bottle suggests leaving the conditioner on for a couple of minutes for extra hydration, which I typically do with all of my conditioners anyway. However, it’s really not optional with this one. In order to get any real hydration at all I pretty much need to leave it on for a few minutes. I try to leave it on as long as possible, but sometimes I still feel the need to add a little leave-in conditioner afterwards to avoid my hair feeling dry. My hair is healthy– it was cut recently, but I do heat style frequently. Despite using a heat protector, it gets dry if I don’t have enough conditioner. I will continue to use this, but it doesn’t seem as amazing or earth shattering as the shampoo.
The Results
I do definitely feel like my hair is lighter and more volumized (not weighed down with tons of silicones), and I have much less frizz on the top of my head. This is the best silicone/sulfate free shampoo & conditioner I’ve ever used, that is for darn sure. Most silicone/sulfate free hair products actually cause my scalp a lot of irritation; whatever cleansing ingredient they use to replace the sulfates doesn’t agree with me. I experienced none of that using this shampoo & conditioner.
Do You Need This?
You should definitely try the shampoo. Everyone should. The conditioner I don’t feel as strongly “you need this!!” about, but it’s definitely worth a shot. Treat it almost like a hair mask– apply the conditioner, go about your business doing something else in the shower like shaving legs, washing face, or whatever, and then rinse. If you need tons of hydration you may want to look in to their leave-in conditioner to go along with it.
Living Proof No Frizz shampoo & conditioner is available at their website or Sephora and comes in 2 sizes, 2 oz for $10 and 8 oz for $24.
