October Favorites

It’s seriously November already? Insane. I feel like the month of October flew by so fast!

Favorite Things for October

Make Up For Ever HD Foundation
This isn’t new to me, in fact I’m just about finished with the bottle and my second bottle arrives tomorrow. I hadn’t been wearing foundation much lately but then started reaching for this more and more often. I love how it wears, and shade 110 is the perfect match on me.

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner
Oh. Em. Gee. Probably the priciest shampoo & conditioner I’ve ever used but this stuff is amazing. My hair is left so soft and smooth and hydrated. Over the last few months I’ve really noticed my hair being more dry. Not sure why that is as nothing changed for me, but this shampoo & conditioner are really helping me get my hair to look great. It’s definitely not cheap though and I’m going to reluctantly have to shell out the money for full sizes when my little minis run out.

Rock & Republic blush in Spank
Spank is the perfect shade of pale pink! However, this blush is very pigmented. Some pale blushes can be chalky and sheer. Not this one! The quality of these blushes is soooo nice. They’re so soft and finely milled. They look great on the skin, too.

OPI Sparkle-licious nail polish
If you love glitter, you need this polish. It’s gold glitter with some pink and blue glitter mixed in. It looks ADORABLE as a blinged-out pedicure, which is how I’ve been wearing it for a couple weeks, and will look really cute as a holiday manicure too. This is one color that I would consider matching my toes and tips in the same polish, which I hardly ever do.

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product First Impressions

Normally I do not review a product right after I try it, but sometimes I just can’t help myself. I saw this product on Youtube and it’s been on my radar since then, but when I had my recent 20% off coupon for Ulta I decided to give it a whirl. It’s available in 4 oz and 10 oz sizes at Ulta, so I picked up the 4 oz to try. Apparently there’s a 2 oz too, but I didn’t see it. I’ve only tried it once so far, but I just had to tell you guys about it and my first impressions.
It’s a 10 claims to do these 10 things:
– Repairs dry damaged hair
– Adds shine
– Smooths & controls frizz
– Seals & protects hair color
– Flat iron spray & thermal protector
– Detangles
– Stops hair breakage
– Creates silkiness
– Enhances natural body
– Prevents split ends
Quite a tall list of claims, right? Well I used it the day before yesterday and I gotta say, so far it lives up to all of the claims that I could possibly tell in one use (some of those, like split end prevention etc. you just couldn’t know in using it once). It definitely made my hair very silky, almost bouncy, detangled, smoothed, controlled frizz, added shine, and made my hair feel less dry even on the ends. It made flat ironing a breeze, too. I had such an awesome hair day yesterday and the day before and I just know it was in part due to this product I’ve added to my stash. As I’m growing my hair out, if this continues to perform the way it did the first time, this will be essential to keeping my hair manageable! I’ve been using Alterna products lately to boost my hair’s moisture, and this product complements the items I’m already using pretty nicely.
Have you tried this? Was it a 10 for you too?

Hair Heroes & Villains

I think most people have that tried & true shampoo and conditioner that they know works for them, they love it, etc. But some of us have that…erm…wandering eye when it comes to our hair products. What if there’s something better out there? Or maybe you had a hair-mergency, were out of shampoo, or had to use someone else’s in a pinch (like your boyfriend’s roommate’s Herbal Essences…not that I know anything about that). Because of both types of scenarios, I have often used something I normally wouldn’t reach for on my hair. Usually it’s no big deal.

Famous last words.

I’ve reviewed hair products before and usually they’re at least “okay”. I had a less than stellar experience with the Barex line, but it still wasn’t too bad I just noticed my hair wasn’t quite as silky as it usually is. The one I recently tried for review is Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Breakage Defense Shampoo & Conditioner. I received them from Pantene’s PR team to review and they came in a super cute gift box with some chocolate! Yum. I was in the middle of moving at the time though so I kind of put them up on the shelf and forgot about them until about a week ago.

When I finally got around to checking them out, my first step was to open the tubes and take a whiff. Both smell pleasant, if not a little generic– just kind of a soft floral fruity scent. And why is it that shampoos so often smell much better than conditioners? I don’t know. But they do. I was kind of enthused by the fact that the product itself is blue! Blue shampoo. How fun! Okay maybe I’m really easily amused? The products’ consistencies are typical. The shampoo is liquidy but creamy and the conditioner is a little thicker and creamier. The shampoo lathers really really well, which is something sorta satisfying.

However…the ingredients that make shampoo lather (the detergent agents) can often be rough on your hair/scalp. This is why a lot of those all natural shampoos (ie without those harsh ingredients) often don’t have such a lathery foam. And as I was about to discover, the luxurious feeling of all that lather comes with a price.

After using the Pantene duo a couple times my hair was fine. It was silky, it was soft, and I was satisfied. My plan was to use the products for 30 days to see if I lost any fewer hairs in the shower (a claim that is right there on the tube). But after about the third wash or so my hair started to feel a bit dry. And then after the fourth wash, my scalp started to flake and itch. End trial. No more! Couldn’t tell you if my hair’s any stronger because I spend too much time trying to calm my scalp down to really notice! And losing fewer hairs would be a small consolation to flaking all over– gross.

It is important that I stop and mention here (well, mention again) that I have really sensitive skin on my scalp. A lot of products that I have tried in the past have had this same effect. I was all but rid of it for the last couple of years though when I really got to know my skin and how it does with things. It usually tends to be the cheaper products from the drugstore that do this to me, but I’ve had it happen with even really high quality, sulfate-free formulas. (And on the flip side of that I’ve also tried some really awesome hair stuff from the drugstore too!)

So will these work for you? Maybe. Do I recommend them? Err, probably not. I just know that Pantene is one of the #1 drugstore brands for a reason so it must work for some people!

The shampoo & conditioner I have turned to (back to) for help restoring my hair to its original splendor (lol) are from Aveeno! I am using their Nourish+ Soothe shampoo and Nourish+ Revitalize conditioner. I really do love these. They’re inexpensive, easy to find, and my hair always looks so soft and bouncy even after I air dry without any styling. And they’re very gentle on my sensitive skin, which is what drew me to them in the first place. Aveeno skin care has a reputation for being great on sensitive skin, so logic told me that their hair care would probably be the same way. And it is!

When I run out of the Aveeno stuff I probably will repurchase them, but not for quite a while. That’s only because I have a couple bottles of Biolage I want to use up. Biolage is another line I really like, but it’s pretty much twice the cost of Aveeno, and I have to get it at Ulta instead of any drugstore or Target etc. I know some drugstores are carrying Biolage now but then there’s the whole diverted goods thing blah blah blah, plus I know at least CVS marks up their Biolage a little and they don’t have the cool BOGO sales Ulta does. ;) Score!

So how about you? Who are your hair’s heroes and villains?

Barex Colourlife Shampoo & Conditioner

Recently I received a box of sample products from one of the PR companies I am in touch with. I hadn’t heard of any of the brands, which is always really exciting to me. I love discovering new brands and sharing them with others.

Among the items in the box were these cute tiny bottles of Barex Colourlife Shampoo & Conditioner. I haven’t colored my hair in a really long while (probably a year), but I thought why not have a go at the shampoo & conditioner anyway. I’ve been thinking of coloring my hair again sometime.

So I gave it a shot. Now, coloring your hair can be stressful on it. Part of the reason I stopped coloring is to try and keep it as healthy as possible so it will grow longer faster. Shampoos and conditioners for colored hair are supposed to (in general):

– Repair/shield hair from the damage of coloring
– Help protect color from fading

They should be neither harsh, nor drying, and very nurturing to the hair and scalp. So with that in mind, I was pretty disappointed in these products. My hair is fine, but plentiful, and normal– not really dry or particularly oily. However upon using the Barex shampoo & conditioner for a few days my hair became rough, dry, and almost straw-like. After blow drying it was frizzy, even though I use a heat-protecting conditioner religiously before I blow dry. Yuck.

It’s really not often that I post negative reviews. This is because I do not usually try a product if I don’t at least think it might work for me, so I don’t often have too many negative experiences. Also, I try to always look for the positive about a product. Just because something didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it will be awful for everyone. (Although there are always those fun products that are just GHASTLY and when that happens I warn everyone to stay far, far away!) However, I really can’t find anything I like about this shampoo and conditioner at all. The conditioner claims to add “weightless shine”. My hair certainly wasn’t weighed down, but it sure as hell wasn’t shiny either. It was dry and frizzy. Ew. I had to use a TON of leave-in conditioner to get it looking halfway decent, and that’s no good for gals w/ fine hair like me.

Sorry Barex, can’t all be winners.

Review – Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo & Conditioner

Okay I’m about to blind you with science. Check it.

There are a lot of products that claim to get rid of or prevent frizzy hair, but when I started reading about the products from Living Proof, I got excited. Living Proof has developed a new frizz-fighting technology called PolyfluoroEster. It’s actually the first new technology in this arena in 30 years! PolyfluoroEster works by creating a smooth surface on the hair that reduces friction between hair fibers and repels moisture– the main cause of frizz.

The coolest thing (I think) about how PolyfluoroEster works is that this coating it creates also repels things like oil and dirt. It’s like teflon protection for your hair! It actually makes it so you don’t have to wash your hair as often. This is a good thing because over-shampooing is actually a bad thing for your hair.

The Living Proof line includes a shampoo and conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, 2 types of treatments, and 4 styling products. I have been trying the shampoo and conditioner for a few weeks now to really get a feel for how they work for me and my hair. (Note: These products were provided as press samples.) I have sort of mixed feelings.

The Shampoo

I love the shampoo. I can really feel how clean my hair is after using it, but it doesn’t leave my hair thirsty and stripped, begging for conditioner. It builds a glorious lather. All the Living Proof products smell vaguely chemically and vaguely citrusy. This is a fantastic shampoo that I will definitely continue to use.

The Conditioner

The conditioner leaves me feeling a little lukewarm. It’s not bad, but I don’t feel like it’s quite hydrating enough. The bottle suggests leaving the conditioner on for a couple of minutes for extra hydration, which I typically do with all of my conditioners anyway. However, it’s really not optional with this one. In order to get any real hydration at all I pretty much need to leave it on for a few minutes. I try to leave it on as long as possible, but sometimes I still feel the need to add a little leave-in conditioner afterwards to avoid my hair feeling dry. My hair is healthy– it was cut recently, but I do heat style frequently. Despite using a heat protector, it gets dry if I don’t have enough conditioner. I will continue to use this, but it doesn’t seem as amazing or earth shattering as the shampoo.

The Results

I do definitely feel like my hair is lighter and more volumized (not weighed down with tons of silicones), and I have much less frizz on the top of my head. This is the best silicone/sulfate free shampoo & conditioner I’ve ever used, that is for darn sure. Most silicone/sulfate free hair products actually cause my scalp a lot of irritation; whatever cleansing ingredient they use to replace the sulfates doesn’t agree with me. I experienced none of that using this shampoo & conditioner.

Do You Need This?

You should definitely try the shampoo. Everyone should. The conditioner I don’t feel as strongly “you need this!!” about, but it’s definitely worth a shot. Treat it almost like a hair mask– apply the conditioner, go about your business doing something else in the shower like shaving legs, washing face, or whatever, and then rinse. If you need tons of hydration you may want to look in to their leave-in conditioner to go along with it.

Living Proof No Frizz shampoo & conditioner is available at their website or Sephora and comes in 2 sizes, 2 oz for $10 and 8 oz for $24.

Review – Nature’s Gate Hair Products

Nature’s Gate Tea Tree Oil Shampoo
3 out of 5 – would not purchase again
I liked the idea of this shampoo– silicone free, tea tree oil for the scalp, inexpensive, and easily accessible (they have it at my grocery store super close to where I live). However, it didn’t really work out. It was great for my sensitive scalp (no flakes, no irritation, etc), but not so much for my hair. It left my hair feeling DRY (and I’m normally oily), straw-like, frizzy, and very hard to detangle without breaking the hair. I have fine, damage-prone hair to begin with so, that was unacceptable. I ended up returning it.

Nature’s Gate Chamomile Replenishing Conditioner for Color-Treated Hair
4 out of 5 – would not purchase again
Nature’s Gate describes this conditioner as deeply moisturizing, and that’s certainly the case! It smells good and leaves my hair feeling very soft, but somewhat weighed down. It would be great for damaged hair, I’m sure. My hair is fine, though, and this is too heavy. I returned this one too.
