Veet Spray On Hair Removal Cream

Have you ever tried something and really wanted to love it, but just couldn’t?

Yeah that’s kind of how I feel about this stuff. :\ I’d tried other forms of Veet before and been enthusiastic, so I was glad to get the chance to try this kind.
On the plus side, it’s inexpensive so if you just want to try it out it won’t kill your wallet. It runs about $6-7. Also, the big deal about this one is the sprayer, and that part of it is very good. It sprays consistently and evenly so you don’t even really have to try hard to get an even layer, which I know from experience is essential to it working correctly.
However, I can’t say this was a product I enjoyed using too much at all. And that makes me sad. The instructions say to wait 3 minutes, test a small area, and then either wait 3 more minutes or go ahead and scrape the rest of it off with their bladeless razor (which by the way is an ingenious tool). I applied. I waited 3 minutes. Because of the whole burning hair thing, it began to smell pretty rank.
I did a test patch. Seemed to be working. So I dove in. Well, after scraping it off (you basically shave, but there’s no blade in the thingy), about 25% of the hair had been removed. Which for those of you math wizzes out there means this stuff isn’t too great on the first go-round. :\ So with the next section of leg I waited about 5-6 minutes. Still hair left over. I had to scrape kind of hard to get the remaining hair to pull free, which it did eventually. I had to do that or it would have just rubbed off on clothes or something and that’s err, gross. So my leg was kind of irritated from the scraping, so I decided to just rinse off and be done with it, not moving on to the next leg.
Rinsing. Interesting. This stuff is nice and foamy until you add water. Then it turns into slimey goo. :\ Gets very slippery in a tub. And it takes quite a while to really rinse ‘clean’ from the leg and all the surfaces of the bathtub.
And now my leg is super irritated. To the point where if my very lightweight shorts touch the skin on my leg, it hurts enough to make me curse. :\
Soooo yeah, I’ll be sticking to my trusty Venus Divine and Kiss My Face shave cream, because I haven’t found anything that works better.

Silky Smooth Legs

Goodness knows my legs are seeing more daylight these days with the good weather and all, so when I read these tips from Paula Begoun about shaving I thought I would pass them along to you along with my own personal recommendations.

Paula says…

There is no real trick to shaving. We all know how to do it, but not everyone knows how to get the best results and the softest legs. The following tips are the basics of a great, smooth shave:

  • It is essential for your legs to be wet for at least two or three minutes before starting. Few things are as irritating or chafing as shaving dry or slightly damp legs.
  • Find a razor that works well for your skin. Given the pressure you use while shaving, the texture of your skin, and the density of hair growth, this takes some experimentation. No single type of razor works well for everyone, but the three- and four-bladed razors are gentler by far and produce better results than throwaway or single-use razors.
  • Change the blade frequently—dull razors make for poor shaving results. How often to change the blade depends on frequency of use, hair density, and how thick your skin is. As a general guideline, using a fresh blade every third or fourth shave is fine.
  • When it comes to shaving creams, for both men and women, those that contain emollients (usually those identified as being good for sensitive, dry skin) work perfectly on the legs! There is absolutely no reason to buy shaving gels or creams in pretty pink containers when in truth they are virtually identical to those in more masculine or unadorned packages.
  • Avoid shaving products that contain irritants. Used over newly shaved skin, irritating ingredients can cause red bumps and ingrown hairs. When I find myself without shaving cream in the shower, I use hair conditioner or body wash instead, which is far easier on the legs than bar soap or bar cleanser. Common irritants include menthol, eucalyptus, peppermint, and lime.
  • For best results, shave against the growth of hair, go slowly, rinse the blade often, and be careful.
  • After you are done, do not use a loofah or washcloth; shaving is enough exfoliation for your legs. Any extra abrasion can cause too much irritation and create problems.
  • At night, apply a moisturizer, and during the day, if your legs are going to be exposed to sun, apply a moisturizer with sunscreen (SPF 15 or greater) that contains the UVA-protecting ingredients avobenzone, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, Tinosorb, or Mexoryl SX.
  • Do not use an AHA or BHA lotion over newly shaved skin; they can be unnecessarily irritating at this time.

I totally have used body wash or conditioner in place of shaving cream too, haha. I have extremely sensitive skin on my legs. I am especially prone to razor burn. Ouch!

Before I shave I like to scrub with a gentle body scrub. The one I’ve been using lately is Bath & Body Works Scrub in Warm Vanilla Sugar. Apparently the scrub has been reformulated since I got mine though. In between shave days I still love to use 100% Pure’s body scrub, but due to the oils and such in it that make it so great, it’s not a good product for using right before a shave.

The life-changing product I use as a shaving cream is no joke. I never get razor burn anymore when I use it. It’s Kiss My Face Moisture Shave. Moisture Shave comes in 7 scents (including nonscented) but my favorite is peaches & creme. :) Yum. I cannot recommend this product enough. It’s gentle enough for men to use on their faces, too (but definitely get the unscented version for this purpose).

My razor of choice for years now is the Venus Divine. Each blade head has 3 blades and comfort strips that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera. The head pivots and hugs the curves of my legs for a great shave.

Bliss Bikini Perfect

I like gadgets. I do not like hair. Gadget that removes hair? Perfect!

Unexpectedly, my favorite purpose for this nifty doo-dad is EYEBROW GROOMING. It’s the holy grail of eyebrow grooming for my unruly brows. I use the eyebrow trimmer attachment with the comb on it to trim my brows pain-free. No more crouching in front of the mirror with scissors trying not to hurt myself or accidentally chop off too much. I literally run this thing over my brows as if I were going to shave them off, and get a perfect trim. Then I use the itty bitty micro-shave attachment to trim the little bitty baby hairs that grow off towards my temples that would take 50 years to pluck. I also use it between my brows because shhh…I would have a killer unibrow if I didn’t do something about it.

Erm, as far as actually trimming the bikini area, that’s another story. I don’t know about you, but it takes me a while to groom “that” area. It’s awkward, and you uh, want to make sure you don’t cut yourself or miss a spot. The problem with needing to take some time on this is if you keep the Bliss Bikini Perfect on for a while, it gets hot. And I don’t mean a little warm, but HOT. Like you will burn your nether regions with it. NOT okay. :\ I have emailed Bliss about this multiple times and have never received a response.

Another warning…never ever use the epillating attachment. It sounds like a jet engine grinding up rocks, and I just tried it and wound up drawing blood. I now have a neosporin-aloe vera mustache. If you don’t know what an epillator is, just don’t.

So um. As a bikini trimmer? Ehh…C-. As an eyebrow groomer? A+.

By the way I do still use tweezers on my brows to groom them. I like the ones from EyesLipsFace.com and they’re a dollar.
