The Benefits of Benefit Cosmetics

Benefit_Logo

About a month ago (yeah, this post is overdue…what else is new…) I attended a fun Benefit event at Macy’s in Westminster. I got my makeup done by supersweet MUA Katie, and she and I talked about the latest and greatest (and some cult favs) from Benefit! Inspired, here is my list of favorites from Benefit. If you’re new to the brand, or just want to try some new things, check these out! [Read more…]

November Favorites

It’s November favorites time!!! Woo woo! Since I started a new job in November I have been wearing a lot more makeup, but I’ve also been getting up super early and spending a LOT of time in my car, so I’ve just been keeping a few choice products in a makeup single makeup bag and “living” out of that bag (plus the various lip products in my purse…) [Read more…]

Too Faced Better Than False Lashes Mascara First Impressions

Let’s talk about a mascara. Particularly, Too Faced Better Than False Lashes mascara. Okay, right there in the name that’s a pretty lofty claim. And just LOOK at the ridiculous picture on the box. There is no early way a mascara did that to someone’s lashes. There just isn’t. But whatever. The reviews on this so far that I’ve seen have been positive, so I had pretty high hopes.

I’ll let the pictures do the talking first. Here are my bare lashes:

I wouldn’t say my lashes are bad or anything, but I prefer a bit more length, separation, darkness, etc. Just a bit more. My lashes on steroids is kind of the look I’d prefer. Here’s my lashes, but the eye on (your) left has 1 application of this system (which consists of a base coat of mascara, a coat of fibers, and a top coat of mascara).

Hello! I saw much darker lashes, significantly more length, and volume. Here’s the mascara on both eyes:

HELLO. In mega close-up world, my lashes look a little spidery. But from normal person distance they look pretty spectacular. So I am somewhat impressed. But here are all my initial first impressions, good and bad:

GOOD:

– Great length.
– Not as messy as it sounds having to coat the fibers on top of the mascara and then mascara again on top of fibers.
– Mascara is a glossy dark shade of black (which might sound silly, aren’t all blacks dark? but some moreso than others).
– Did I mention LENGTH? Holy shit.

BAD:

– You can feel it on your lashes. I’m not a regular fiber mascara user (they kinda scare me) so I don’t know if this is typical, but I can feel it on my lashes as I blink and go about my day with the mascara on. I don’t particularly like being “aware” of my mascara all day.
– The mascara itself is kind of wet so the opportunity for smudges is pretty big.
– The occasional fiber + mascara will brush off as you’re applying the 2nd coat of mascara, and that kind of makes a mess.
– It’s 35 fucking dollars.  For a mascara. Yes it’s a fancy mascara, but you have to toss mascara every 3 to 6 months! STEEP. It’s not the most expensive mascara I’ve ever seen (that honor goes to Cle de Peau) but it’s pretty close.

I’m still trying it out, as this is just a “first impressions” review. I think in the future things that will help this mascara look even better are combing my lashes before and after I apply it, and more practice.

Have you tried this mascara? What did you think?

February Favorites

Hello hello everyone! It’s MARCH, so that means it’s time to talk about FEBRUARY. Err, in other words, my favorites from February. Woot!

Favorite Hair Products

Um realistically my favorite hair product in February was my beloved Stephanie, aka Awesome Colorist, but since calling her a product is kind of rude, I’ll go with the kind that are in bottles!

Ahh the precious. I have talked about the Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Overnight Hair Rescue (long enough name for ya?) before, but it is basically like an intensive night cream for your hair. You put it in at night and then wash it out in the morning. I love it! My hair has been dry (because really I’m overdue for a trim) and this doesn’t make it go away completely (needing a trim is cured by, -gasp- getting a trim) but it really helps. Now, no lies this stuff is expensive, so it’s definitely a splurge item. ($35 at Sephora or Ulta)
Another favorite of mine recently has been the Wen Cleansing Conditioner in Winter Vanilla Mint. This scent was limited edition around holiday, so I’m sorry for talking about it now, but I just now have really been using it the past month, give or take. I already used up a bottle of the Sweet Almond Mint last fall, and reviewed it for Stylebell. I love Wen Cleansing Conditioners! They don’t weigh my fine hair down and they really make it feel bouncy and healthy. The Winter Vanilla Mint smells like candies, and if I had to point out any flaws it’s just that it makes me hungry. (Available at QVC – $29)

Favorite Skin Products

I haven’t really been doing a whole lot differently with my skin. Still using either Caudalie’s foaming cleanser or my Neaclear. I’m also still using The Body Shop’s Vitamin E moisturizers (love love love love love!). But as I’m wearing more makeup lately, I’m adding a few things that help makeup “play nice” with my skin.

I’m still learning how to deal with my dry skin. For years I had oily skin, and I’ve really only had dry skin for the past year or so. It’s a whole new experience! I took for granted that I never had the problem of my skin looking too matte. Now, even on days where I’m not wearing any makeup, I like to go over my whole face with MAC Strobe Liquid. It’s just a thin, slightly hydrating lotion that has a very pretty pearly pink luminescent quality. It gives my face that natural glow that has since left me along with my overactive oil producing skin, lol. I’ve also been using my MAC Fix+ more, as it takes down the powderiness of face powders. (Strobe Liquid and Fix+ are available from MAC for $30 and $20 respectively.)

Favorite Color Products

Wee! The fun part! Like I said, I’ve been wearing more makeup lately. I made you a collage!
These are all the things I’ve been feeling much love for over the past month. I’ve been wearing very little in the way of foundation or concealer, but I do sometimes wear a little MAC Mineralized SkinFinish Natural just to even out my complexion. Sometimes you just wake up looking a little blotchy, yanno? Yeah.  And NARS Laguna is a staple product that I’m obsessed with because it adds warmth/glow without looking orange or dirty. (MSFN is $29 at MAC; NARS Laguna is $34 at Sephora)
The drugstore lip products are killing it right now, and I’ve been wearing my Rimmel Stay Glossy Lipglosses and Revlon Lip Butters pretty much exclusively day to day. Revlon Lip Butters are another one of those products that have been getting a ton of hype lately, and they’re TOTALLY worth it. I have three (Creamsicle, Candy Apple, and Sweet Tart) and I LOVE THEM. I was just saying on Twitter that I want more. :) (Price varies on these from drugstore to drugstore.)
I’ve been on a bit of a NARS Eye Shadow kick, using the heck out of my Doceurs de Paris palette and my Best of NARS palette, particularly a couple shades from the Kalahari and All About Eve duos. But as usual, I’m using drugstore mascara. Rimmel ScandalEyes is my lash of choice lately. It’s really dramatic. It’s not my absolute favorite mascara, but I like it. I will be reviewing it more in-depth soon. If you liked MaxFactor 2000 Calorie mascara but are living in the states and can’t get it anymore, try Rimmel ScandalEyes. I think you’d like it. For my brows, I still love my Billion Dollar Brows brow powder (holy grail!) but I have been really liking the new Senna Cosmetics Sketch-a-Brow pencil too. The effect is very natural-looking and it’s so simple to use. (NARS eye shadows vary in price at NARS; Rimmel ScandalEyes will vary depending on the drugstore, and Sketch-a-Brow is $18 from Senna Cosmetics)
I just realized I completely forgot another product when I was making my collage!
The Magic Hair Pad is one of those genius inventions that makes you think “why didn’t I think of that?!”. The concept is super simple– it’s a square of velcro. Really. That’s all it is. But you press it into your hair to hold it out of place while doing makeup, washing your face, doing a facial mask, etc. GENIUS. The picture shows black, but they come in pink too. I like them so much sometimes I will sport one just to hold my bangs out of place while I’m hanging out around the house. Not the most fashionable statement, but the rest of my outfit usually consists of flannel pajama bottoms and a tank top when I’m doing this, so I have thrown fashion to the wind at that point. ;) But pretty much any girl with hair needs to own these. I think that’s most of you. (Available in a pack of 2 for $7 at MagicHairPad.com)

Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes Mascara

Remember how I said I don’t like reviewing products I feel “meh” about because I don’t think those posts are interesting to read, or products I don’t like…? Yeah. Well. Sorry in advance, because I feel ‘meh’ about this mascara! I was excited to try it since I’d never tried a Lancome mascara before and I know so many girls who love these. However, my results with this particular one are just blah.

One coat of Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes
The brush (seen at the top image) comes out really gloppy. That’s a technical term. It comes out with a lot of mascara on the brush. It just doesn’t seem to do that much. It’s a really natural looking mascara. I saw Pursebuzz did a review of this on her youtube channel and she wasn’t that impressed either. Like her, when something says “doll lashes” I expect them to be like BAM. DOLLY LASHES, YO! But this is more like “hi, psst, dolly lashes.”
Yes, it looks better if you also curl your lashes, but uh…can’t that be said about ANY mascara?

It also smudges a bit on me, and as someone with dry skin this is normally not an issue with me. I like a mascara that I don’t have to worry about if I wanna take a little catnap. This one will get all over the dang place if you do that. It’s also a bit on the flaky side. Blah.
If you want to try a mascara that I like a lot better, save yourself $20 and get L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes. Or if you’re a masochist, go to Sephora and spend $26 on this one. But don’t say I didn’t warn ya!

CoverGirl NatureLuxe Mascara Review

Ever since CoverGirl came out with Lash Blast and then all of the million ones after that (LB Fusion, LB Volume, LB Amazeballs, I don’t know…) I found myself kind of losing interest. I didn’t particularly care for Lash Blast that much and have tried numerous drugstore mascaras I do like (Rimmel, Revlon). I just didn’t want to keep up with all of the different mascaras it seemed CoverGirl was launching every five minutes. In fact, just for giggles and to prove I’m not crazy, I went to the CoverGirl website and counted. There are 22 mascaras

But then as part of the Vogue Influencer program I received a CoverGirl NatureLuxe mascara to try out and I thought “eh, why not?”. I mean after all it was here in my hands already, and I was thoroughly fed up with L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black (Not)Waterproof mascara (review for that abomination coming shortly).

So what exactly is NatureLuxe mascara? It is a mousse formula mascara that claims your lashes will feel 20% lighter than when wearing other mascaras, and give you 2x more volume than bare lashes. The product description is really vague as to what makes this mascara “nature” luxe, other than there’s honey in it. It says they removed a “heavy synthetic”. They don’t say explain heavy synthetic what. Just because things are synthetic doesn’t make them bad, so the nature part of it seems really gimmicky to me.

As to the mascaras claims, I do feel that it’s very lightweight. Is it 20% lighter than when I wear other mascaras? Hell if I know. How do you measure 20% lighter when it’s your eyelashes. We’re talking about such infinitesimal differences who would really be able to tell? Whatever, haha. The volume is nice, and probably about 2x more than my bare lashes, like it says. I really like the length I get from it too.

Even though it sounds like I’m bashing the mascara, I’m really not. I actually like this mascara quite a bit. It’s lightweight, doesn’t clump my lashes together, and doesn’t smear all over the place despite being a mousse.

And now…pictures! These pictures were taken with one coat only, on my top lashes. I later discovered you can layer this and wore a couple of layers together without it clumping up. Pictures can be enlarged if you need.

NYX Propel My Eyes Mascara

I mentioned recently that I’d been trying a couple of NYX mascaras that I wasn’t wild about and wasn’t going to review. Well, guess I lied haha. I’ve been trying NYX Propel My Eyes mascara and Fly With Me mascara. Turns out, I don’t particularly like Fly With Me, but I do actually sorta like Propel My Eyes. It’s not a holy grail, but I thought it was worth discussing.
NYX says this wand has a “4-way pinwheel design”. Honestly, it’s kind of hard to tell when the wand is coated with mascara, haha. It’s designed to give your lashes lift. The formula is said to be conditioning due to the ingredients panthenol (vitamin B) and green tea extract. Alright, that’s what they say, here are my thoughts.
Application & Effect – Propel My Eyes mascara definitely gives my lashes a lot of lift. I am usually too lazy to curl my lashes unless it’s a special occasion, but my lashes don’t really need it with this product on. I apply my mascara in an upward and outward motion, which already lifts them quite a bit, but combined with this mascara I get a nice fan of lashes. The application requires a little bit of combing to keep my lashes from sticking together. Propel My Eyes mascara comes in one shade, “Jet Black”. It’s black enough even for Bernard Hopkins! I notice more lengthening than volumizing, though it does also volumize. The length is great.
Wear – Here’s where I get a little unhappy. My tube is a couple months old already so it might just be a sign of its age, but I do see a little flaking and smudging after it’s been on for a while. That makes me a sad panda.
Flaking mascara makes me a sad panda.
Now here’s where I have a major issue with the mascara. It’s $13 bucks. That’s on the low end for a high end mascara, but for NYX, that’s pretty high. Doll Eyes mascara is only $9, and their “classic” long lash mascara is only $5, so why the huge jump in price? To put it in perspective, MAC mascaras are $14. I know NYX is trying to develop more “advanced” products, such as their HD line, but this just isn’t a $13 mascara. So I like it, but I wouldn’t buy it at full price.
If you do decide to buy this, or any other NYX products, I highly recommend BeautyJoint.

Hourglass Cosmetics Film Noir Mascara Review

I’ve always thought that mascara is one of the few things even beauty mavens really don’t need to splurge on. There are loads of great mascaras available in the drugstore. Now, there still are a lot of great mascaras in the drugstore, but uh… sorry, this really expensive mascara is amazing. And, dare I say, perhaps worth the exorbitant $28 price tag?

Oddly enough, I never set out to try this mascara. I placed an order some months ago at Apothica. I actually bought Hourglass’ other mascara, Superficial Lash, and a lipstick. I received a little sample tube of Film Noir mascara with my order, and since I had other mascaras open at the time I decided to try the little sample before opening another full sized mascara.

And thus, my love affair with Film Noir Full Spectrum mascara began.

From the moment I first applied this mascara, it has been love and bliss. Hourglass says this mascara is designed to give length, volume, jet black color and sheen, lift, and separation. That’s a mighty list of claims for one mascara. But oh, let me tell you. It delivers! I have what I would say are average lashes. Not super long, but not short and stubby either. I want DRAMA. I want big huge black fluttery lashes. I never understood those adjustable mascaras where you can choose ‘day’ or ‘night’. I want drama lashes. All the time. I definitely get that with this mascara! True to the name of the brand, Hourglass Film Noir mascara has an hourglass shaped brush, which is best illustrated with this photo from Sephora:

Interestingly enough, at least one person used “awesomeness” as one of the attributes of this mascara in a review on Sephora’s site. I completely agree!

I took these photos purposefully without any eyeliner because I wanted you to see truly how my lashes look just with the help of this mascara. No mascara was applied to the bottom lashes in this case. I did comb my lashes afterward, but that was more because my lashes tend to criss cross each other and point all weird directions on their own. No curler or primers were used. In fact, when I tried this with Urban Decay’s Lash Primer Potion, the result was an epic clumpy fail. This mascara does not play well with others– a bit of a diva. Like a film actress!

While I did not apply any mascara to my bottom lashes in this instance, I do often apply the Film Noir mascara to my bottom lashes. It doesn’t smudge. In fact, this mascara never smudges. Ever. Or flakes. It’s not waterproof, but I wore it to the gym yesterday and it didn’t smudge or flake. This is due to the acacia senegal gum, which acts as an adhesive. This mascara also contains panthenol, (provitamin B5) and vegetable oil to give the lashes shine, and act as a conditioner. I can tell that my lashes are getting a benefit from it; I lose fewer lashes. I like that it’s all in one product because even though lash conditioners are awesome, I don’t always want to take the time to use them in addition to everything else I’ve got going on.
Hourglass Cosmetics are available at Apothica & Sephora, and the Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara runs $28 at both.
