Maybelline The Falsies Mascara

The Falsies. It’s a very polarizing mascara. People either love this, or hate this. I am more towards the love camp, myself. I definitely do not hate it. I’m not sure I completely love it, but it’s pretty darn good. I wish it gave me a bit more length. I get great volume and definition from it though. Maybelline sure is getting creative with their mascara brushes. This one is “spoon shaped”. I have no idea if the wand is really helping my lashes or not, but they look nice.

As far as wear goes, I do not have any problems with smudging or flaking. A blanket recommendation for all Maybelline mascaras though is to open them for a minute, then wait about a week before using. Or if you’re patient, you’ll just notice that with regular use, about a week after you start using it they get a little better. Weird, but whatever works, right?

Onward to PICTURES! I am pretty sure I didn’t comb my lashes after applying this because unless there are like mega clumps I usually just swipe on mascara and go. Not wearing it on my lower lashes. Lashes have not been curled, or primed.

Photographing one’s own eyeballs is so awkward…

Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara Review

This review has been a long time coming. I’ve been using this mascara since mid to late June! At least you know I’m being thorough. ;) If you saw my stash pics, you probably saw this baby peeking out at you:

The packaging is a shiny green-teal tube. I like it. It’s not a big huge honkin thing that takes up tons of room.

Revlon Grow Luscious has a big huge fat brush. I love it. It tapers at the end to help get every lash. However, if you don’t like big mascara brushes or find them cumbersome to use, you will not like Revlon Grow Luscious!
The claims of this mascara are longer, lusher lashes. They also claim it will enhance the condition of your lashes overall, “improving their appearance with each use”. It is important to note that they aren’t claiming this mascara will make your lashes actually grow. But conditioning your lashes will enable them to grow longer before they fall out due to your natural lash cycle. Kinda splitting hairs, but it’s good to know before you try it. With that in mind, I do think this lives up to its claims. My lashes do look overall fuller, much less sparse, and I have fewer fall out when I remove my eye makeup.
On my lashes it makes them look full, soft, and fluttery. It’s not a hugely dramatic look, but then again I don’t layer tons of coats on either. It is pretty layerable without clumping, so if you do like multiple coats, this mascara will serve you well. It also looks nice on lower lashes. It’s not too wet and gloppy! I really like the effect on me, and if I didn’t have piles of other mascaras to try right now, I would probably repurchase. Also worth noting is that I’ve been using it just under 3 months and the tube has not at all begun to get dry or clumpy.
Here’s one coat on my lashes:
Revlon Grow Luscious comes in 4 shades: Black, Blackest Black, Black Shimmer, and Blackened Brown. I tried Blackest Black. There is also a waterproof formula that comes in Blackest Black and Blackened Brown only. The price range varies from store to store, as is usually the nature of drugstore products. Typically it’s around $8, and available at pretty much any drugstore.
Have you tried Revlon Grow Luscious? If you haven’t, do you plan on trying it? Let me know!

Makeup Forever Smoky Lash Mascara

Okay I’ve heard so many raves about this mascara. I’ve heard it gives that false eyelash effect and that it’s basically the end-all volumizing mascara.

If you listen to the raves you’ll expect this mascara to be practically mana from heaven for your lashes. Well, so far I like it a lot, but I don’t love it as much as some of you all do. It is definitely very black which I love and gives me great definition, but I don’t see the insane volume I’ve heard a lot of you all are getting. I’m going to keep experimenting with how to apply it though!

Any application tips would be welcome. Here’s what it looks like on my lashes:

Note that I didn’t apply any to my bottom lashes (obviously, lol) and that the quality of this photo isn’t too great, but even with a lousy picture you can see that this doesn’t exactly make me look like I have false lashes on like I’m hearing about from some of you guys!

One thing I do really love is that it does not smudge on me at all. Well, ok…it does if you are to say, fall asleep in it (I sleep on my side so I smush my face when I sleep lol) but under normal mascara-wearing circumstances it does not smudge on me. It is not really water-resistant AT ALL though, so please if you think there’s any chance you need that in a mascara, get Smoky Lash Aqua, the waterproof version. Smoky Lash also doesn’t FLAKE on me, which is great because black flakes are not cute at all.

I have heard this mascara is great for holding a curl, even the non-waterproof version. I have not yet tried it with that because I haven’t taken the time to curl my lashes in ages. I officially give you permission to bug me on Twitter about this. :) Because I really do mean to try it soon to give you my opinion of how that works.

All cards on the table, I like another mascara I’ve been road testing lately a bit better than this, and that’s Flirt’s new It Curl mascara. I’ll be reviewing that one soon too!

Mascara Sound-Off

Hi all. :) Let’s talk mascara.

What color mascara do you use? I use black, but occasionally will get ‘crazy’ with a purple or blue one.

What are your favorite mascaras? Favorite colored mascaras?

Do any of you wear brown mascara? Or grey? Or do you stick with clear?

Do you use a primer with your mascara? Which one?

Can’t wait to hear your answers. :)

Review Updates – March 2009

The lovely Recessionista over at Nouveau Cheap inspired me to do these ‘update reviews’. In other words, taking a look at some of my past reviews to see if I still feel the same way. I decided to go back to this time last year and see what I was loving/hating in March 2009 and see if I feel the same way. :) If you like these kinds of reviews, let me know! Comment below. :)

Last year I introduced you to DERMAdoctor Ain’t Misbehavin Acne Spot Treatment. I was very pleased with it. I am happy to report that ‘Missy’ and I are still in a love-love relationship, haha. I love this spot treatment. Not only does it contain 5% benzoyl peroxide to help heal the ugliess, it has calming herbal ingredients to soothe the skin which helps the inflammation that goes along with acne. Did you know that the inflammation is what causes the majority of acne scars (other than the pitted ones)? This helps with that, so I’m happy with it. Oh, and I still have the same tube from last year too. I only use a tiny bit at a time, so I still have about half the tube left. Not a bad deal since this product may seem a little pricey at $36. But if it lasts a year, that makes it a little easier on the ole’ wallet.

Last year I was pretty stoked on ELF’s nail polish remover pads. They had improved the formula and I really liked the improvements that had been made, including to the fragrance of the remover. I still think they’re a good value at $1, but these do not last very long and dry out quickly. I would probably still recommend them, but keep that in mind. I wouldn’t stock up on too many packs at a time because by the time you use one up, your extras might not be moist anymore.

I am also pleased to report that I still like Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara. I have even repurchased it since last year’s review, and that is saying a lot since I have a lot of mascaras. In fact, re-reading my review makes me think I should get rid of some of the others I have and just stick to Rimmel!

The No Mascara Look

I keep hearing about this no mascara trend. My reaction is pretty much universally “ugh, why?”. I mean, mascara is awesome. Some trends are really weird, I guess.

But in a fit of adventurousness and I suppose also laziness, I decided to give it a whirl.
My opinion hasn’t changed. This sucks. I have nice lashes naturally, but I really miss the impact that mascara gives. My eyes look tired and blah. No thank you.
How do you feel about the no mascara look?
