NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Review

It’s been a little while since I’ve featured a product from NYX, so I am really excited to share their Soft Matte Lip Creams with you. From the instant I tried one on for the first time I knew these were special! They are unlike any other lip product I’ve ever used. And you have to imagine…that’s a lot of lip products.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams in Sao Paulo and Stockholm

The product description is spot-on. It looks like lipgloss in the tube. Even when you pull out the wand, it just looks like any other creme finish lipgloss. But when you apply it, it’s insanely pigmented, and goes on matte. It’s not the dried out crackly matte of yesteryear either. Nope, this ain’t your mama’s matte. It dries down to a really pretty, almost stained effect. But it differs from a stain in that the color is even. For me, no matter what I do, traditional gel or liquid lip stains never apply completely evenly. The color always sinks into the little line down the center of my bottom lip (aka the lip cleavage, lol) and pools there. Not attractive! I also performed the “straw test” where I puckered my lips as if I were sucking on a straw (creates wrinkles on your lips) to see if the color would shift or crack. Nada! So if you’ve ever had those issues with lip stains, but still crave a similar effect, try these! However, I think everyone should try these. They’re really, really cool.

The two colors I tried are Sao Paulo and Stockholm. My Sao Paulo is labeled “San Paulo” so your label may vary. I would describe Sao Paulo as a pinked terracotta rose. On steroids. It’s very bold. But in a good way. Sao Paulo has completely rich, saturated color. It’s pretty bright on someone as pale as myself, but I’m not afraid to rock a bright lip. For the office, I blotted it to look a little more “stain-y” – yes that’s a technical term. Compared to the swatch on the NYX website I think it’s pretty accurate, but in real life is a touch darker and brighter, if that makes sense.

As far as wear time goes, I was shocked. Maybe this had to do with the fact that I’d already blotted it down to a stain, but Sao Paulo lasts. After lunch and dinner with no reapplication, I could still tell that I had lipcolor on. It was more prominent around the outer edges of my lips, but in a naturally defined lip kind of way rather than a “she’s wearing darker lip liner than her lips” kind of way – ew. And then when I woke up the next morning, my lips still looked pinker than usual.

Stockholm looks pretty straight up beige on the NYX website swatch, but in person is more pinkish. Stockholm is the kind of color you might want to wear if you have very unpigmented lips naturally and just want to look like you have some natural color to your lips. It’s not nearly as ‘out there’ or loud as Sao Paulo.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams in Sao Paulo (top) and Stockholm swatched on pale cool-toned skin (I wear MUFE HD 110).

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams in Stockholm and Sao Paulo blotted down to a stain on pale cool-toned skin.

Both shades of the formula feel weightless on my lips. They do not feel dry, or at all sticky/tacky. They claim to be moisturizing, and I’m not sure exactly how moisturizing they are. However, they definitely aren’t drying. But if your lips tend to be dry naturally, you might want to wear a gloss on top, or a balm underneath. Or both. I don’t know, do what you like! If you apply a lip balm ahead of time and then sorta blot your lips before applying, you’ll still get a matte effect from this lip cream. I wouldn’t say my lips felt moisturized after wearing it, but they didn’t feel dry either. They just felt like… lips. Which, when you think about it, is not a bad thing. These do have a scent, which to me smells like very artificial butter cream frosting. I don’t care for it at all, but it doesn’t linger so I can deal with it. My mom agreed that it smelled very fake, but she actually likes it haha. It reminds us of those cupcake dolls that were scented like different kinds of cake. Maybe this will have the same nostalgic effect on you.

There are 11 shades of NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream and they retail for $6 each. Money definitely well spent. I do not know if they carry these at Ulta, but they are online at Cherry Culture and Nonpareil Boutique! (I love NB but their swatches for this product suck big time) Since Sao Paulo is so bold and out there, I’d love to get my paws on the shade Addis Ababa. I think it will be a must-have for all hot pink lip lovers!

Makeup Remover Round-Up

Yee haw!

Okay cheesiness ends now. Promise. :) Rather than do a ton of short reviews about makeup removers, I thought I’d just do a big huge post with my thoughts on various removers I’ve tried, from cheapo to expensive! This post is for the makeup removers that are supposed to be just swipe and go, so I am omitting anything that needs to be rinsed off or followed with an additional cleanser.

Budget Makeup Removers

Avon Moisture Effective Eye Makeup Remover – $4/2 oz. @ Avon
This one comes in a lotion formula. I don’t find it to be terribly effective on difficult to remove makeup, but it feels nice on the skin and for simple makeup removing it works a treat. It’s also great for quick mistake fixing, so I keep it in my freelancing kit.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover – $5.79/3.8 oz @ Drugstore.com
This is a bi-phase makeup remover. In other words, you need to shake it to mix the ingredients together before using it. I went through probably 3 bottles of this stuff before curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to try other things. It does work really well. For hard to remove eyeliner and mascara etc. you might have to “soak” the area by holding a cotton pad up to the makeup for a minute or so before wiping. I believe Target and/or CVS sell a knock-off of this that is just as good. Maybe Walmart too, I don’t know. What I do know is this is a solid choice if you’re looking for an inexpensive makeup remover. The reason I stopped using it is partly curiosity, and also because when I started tightlining my eyes I noticed that my eyes got irritated when I used this to remove makeup from that area. Sometimes it leaves a bit of a residue, other times not. I think maybe it depends on the makeup you’re removing.

ELF Eye Makeup Remover Pads – $1/18 pads @ ELF
I’m going to say this as nicely as possible: do. not. want. Don’t get me wrong, I love ELF. But not this product. It doesn’t remove very well and it made my eyes water and sting. They also leave a bit of a residue that you have to rinse off, which to me kind of defeats the purpose of having makeup remover in a little pad like this. The pads themselves are very thin, and also dry up quickly. Do yourself a favor and skip these please!

Almay Hypo-Allergenic Eye Makeup Remover Pads (Non Oily Version) – $4.99/80 pads @ Drugstore.com
As Randy Jackson says on American Idol, “it was just okay for me, dog”. I guess I just wasn’t feelin it. These were okay. Not terribly wonderful, not horrible either. Each individual pad isn’t that wet with remover, which made them lack effectiveness. This formula is supposed to be extremely gentle, and it was pretty gentle. I didn’t find them that great at removing all of my mascara. It was after trying these that I wondered if maybe I just don’t like makeup remover pads. Hmm.

Almay Eye Makeup Remover (Oil Free) – $6.29/4 oz @ Drugstore.com
I asked my Twitter followers what makeup remover I should try, and this got a lot of votes. It had been a couple years since my lackluster experiment with the remover pad version of this eye makeup remover formula, but I was still kind of dubious. I bought it, figuring I could always return it if it sucks…? It smells awful. Fragrance-free skincare often does. Companies add fragrance to things because the ingredients naturally smell awful. My first reaction when I opened the bottle: “is it supposed to smell like watered down paint thinner?” Apparently yes, because this eye makeup remover works really well! I’m a newly converted fan. NO stinging and NO residue. If you’re looking for a good gentle makeup remover get this, not the pads.

Mid-Range Makeup Removers

NYX All Purpose Makeup Remover Gel Type – $9/3.4 oz @ NYX
This stuff is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. It smells to me like coconuts. But I don’t know why. Looking at the ingredients, there’s no reason for it to smell like coconuts. Spooky. But I don’t care, because I love it! Leaves the face feeling soft, smooth, clean, and coconutty. Removes makeup very well! I like the gel formula as opposed to a liquid because you have more control with it, so it’s easier to put it where it needs to go. I have not tried the Eye & Lip Makeup Remover, so I can’t compare them, but I’m pretty happy with this unique, effective makeup remover.

High End Makeup Removers

Napoleon Perdis Makeup Remover (Foaming) – $25 @ Napoleon Perdis
Oh. Em. Gee. When I had the extreme delight andĀ privilegeĀ of meeting Napoleon Perdis and having him do my makeup, this was one product I tried where I wasn’t expecting it, but I was instantly hooked. It’s a bit on the expensive side for a makeup remover, so it’s a special treat for me, but holy hell I love it. You know those waterless foaming hand sanitizers? It’s like that, but for MAKEUP removal! It creates this luxurious foam that removes ALL of your makeup. No rinsing required. If you want to treat yourself to an awesome makeup remover, try this!

Special Mention Makeup Removers
These two are really difficult to find, but need to be mentioned because they are excellent. You’ll have to go online to try and find these. Google is your friend. <3

Sana Easy Peel Makeup Cleansing Water – $13.99/10.1 oz @ Webichi
When you read the ingredients of this product you’ll be like wait what? Use this on my eyes? OH HAIL NO. Except I promise you, this is as gentle as pure water. I don’t know how they do it, but this product has AHA and BHA and yet is totally fine for use on the eyes. It also has hyaluronic acid, which is so fabulous for moisturizing. This can also be used as a toner! It’s fantastic at removing makeup, even if I have no idea how it works.

Mandom Cleansing Express – $13.99 or so on various sites such as Amazon or Ebay
Similar to the Sana product above, this is a toner/makeup remover/cleanser in one that is as absolutely gentle as water. I’ve finished 2 bottles of it (which is saying something because they’re big bottles!). This is the ultimate lazy girl’s skin care product. I keep it or the Sana on my bedside table for lazy nights or nights when I’m so tired I might be tempted to sleep in my makeup. No excuses now! Mandom Cleansing Express has 3 formulas: Sebum (oily/acne-prone skin), Moist (dry skin), and Age Care (self-explanatory). I’ve used the sebum formula and the moist formula (which really will work on any skin type in a pinch…my skin was combo/oily at the time) and both work equally well to remove even the most stubborn makeup.

Whew! I hope that helps some of you who might be curious about makeup removers. If you have one that you love that you think I should try, please let me know in the comments. :)

5 September Favorites

I cannot believe September is over. This month positively flew by. I am ready for fall and winter (ok, California does have seasons. Sorta. They’re just not as dramatic as other places. Really.) but California has other ideas. It’s been hot as hell here lately. A couple days ago it was 105. That’s absurdly hot for where I live. The sudden increase in temperature has my allergies going nutsy cuckoo. Lovely. :)

Anyway, favorites! My favorites this month are not very makeup-related because I haven’t been wearing much makeup this month, but they’re still on the topic of beauty.

Sally Hansen Extra Strength Nail Polish Remover
Finally. This nail polish gets the job done. It really is “extra strength”. Even with glitter polishes it takes everything off very quickly. I love it. The best part is it’s extremely cheap! It’s under $2 for a 10 oz bottle. Hooray.

Mango Extreme Hand & Body Creme by California Mango
This stuff is awesome. A friend of mine sent me this nifty little kit of California Mango products that included a small tube of this. It’s very thick, about the consistency of toothpaste, and so moisturizing. I use this on my hands occasionally (especially after a manicure because using nail polish remover can make them dry) but where this product really shines is for use on my feet. If you have a problem with dry feet and heels, try this. I don’t generally have dry skin but from the ankles down I am the Sahara. If that sounds familiar, get yourself to Sally Beauty! It’s the only place I know of that carries it.

Clarisonic Pro Skin Care Brush
I mentioned this in my “what’s in my shower” post, but it deserves another mention here. For the entire month of September I’ve been really vigilant about using my clarisonic at least every other day if not every day. I’ve been absolutely loving the results I get with it. I have had much fewer clogged pores and virtually no breakouts except for in the last day or so, but I chalk that up to allergies because I always break out from all the wiping/rubbing my nose.

Bath & Body Works Dark Kiss Shower Gel
I’ll do a more in-depth review of this shower gel soon on Beauty Debutante, but this shower gel is flippin’ fabulous. The scent is just plain sexy without being overpowering. The shower gel gives a great, luxuriously smooth lather, with or without a lather puff.

NYX Makeup Remover Gel Type
I like that this is a gel because you don’t have to worry about it getting in your eye when you’re removing your eye makeup. It works pretty well, and it smells incredible. It smells like coconuts! I wish this product was more accessible in brick & mortar stores. Actually, that’s my complaint about the NYX line altogether. It’s so hard to find in-store. Ulta’s selection is pretty lousy and they’re the only chain I can find the stuff in. Do try this out though, it’s so yummy!

That’s pretty much it for favorites this month. I haven’t tried that many new things that I’m ready to call ‘favorites’ yet.

I’d also like to mention that today I finally had to ‘retire’ (throw away) my tube of Revlon Grow Luscious mascara because I’ve had it open for about 4 months and I try to be good about replacing my mascara on a regular basis. It was starting to dry out a little bit. RIP Grow Luscious. But I should also mention that despite the fact that I have tons of mascaras I have been meaning to try, I grabbed another tube when Revlon was 40% off at Walgreens because it’s a really nice mascara and I wanted to have it on hand for the next time I try one that sucks and I need to be reminded that mascara is not my enemy. ;)

NYX Studio Liquid Liner Swatches

Here we go! Swatches of all 12 shades of the NYX Studio Liners (with bonus Super Skinny and Super Fat eye marker swatches). I’m really impressed with the studio liners. Once they set, they are vibrant and extremely budge proof. They also do not fade. I am particularly fond of Extreme Sky Blue.

Studio Liner vs. Skinny & Fat Eye Markers: The Extreme Black shade is “blacker” than the super skinny and super fat markers, and also a lot more stay-put. When I rubbed the swatches, the studio liners didn’t move one bit. The skinny & fat markers smudged.

NYX Studio Liners are $4.50 each.
The NYX Super Skinny Eye Marker is $9.
The NYX Super Fat Eye Marker is $10.
All are available at NYX Cosmetics.

Here’s a little video I did on these liners (MY FIRST VIDEO!)…

Drive-By Post

Ha, sorry guys but this post is short and sweet. Just a few words on some products I’m trying out and how I’m liking them so far. More detailed reviews will be coming later. :)

There are some new favorites taking up residence in my shower these days. The most prominent of which is Alba Botanica Haircare. I’ve been trying out their new rainforest acai shampoo and conditioner and I realllllly like it. It’s one of the best natural options I’ve tried so far!

After getting the news of my job loss and feeling really crappy, Mr. Menagerie suggested I take a hot bath with a yummy bath bomb. I selected Moon’s Harvest Oatmeal, Milk, Honey Bath Bomb. This one smelled amazing and was super moisturizing, but kind of left a brown ring in the tub! Not cute. Oh well, it was pretty worth having to clean the tub a little bit. I felt thoroughly relaxed and rejuvenated after my bath. Not to mention my skin was supersoft.

Another newcomer to the Shower de Menagerie is Yardley Soap. I’m obsessed with anything almond scented, so I’ve been trying the oatmeal & almond scented soap. It smells heavenly and I just can’t stop sniffing it when I’m in the shower. There’s also a honeysuckle citrus scent that smells RIDICULOUS (and that’s a good thing by the way) that I look forward to using as well.

Makeup-wise lately I haven’t been trying much in the way of new things because I either haven’t been wearing makeup (I usually don’t wear any if I’m not leaving the house) or I’ve been reaching for tried & true things. The only occasions I’ve done a full face for lately were job interviews, and as I will also mention in an upcoming post, job interviews are no time to experiment! But there is one new product I’ve been using lately that I really like, and that’s NYX Bronzer in Daydream of Kauai. It’s a really great shade for pale girls. It kind of reminds me of my favorite bronzer TooFaced Chocolate Soleil. I haven’t swatched them together yet, but this looks like it could be a very decent cheaper alternative. Of course it doesn’t have the intoxicating chocolate scent, but I think I can let that slide. Afterall, I’ve been using the abundance of free time I have right now to do things like bake brownies.

NYX $1 Sale

NYX Cosmetics has launched their biggest sale ever– the $1 sale! Yes..select merchandise is on sale for just $1. It’s a pretty large selection with lots of great items to choose from. It’s definitely worth checking out. However, there are some catches…

– During the $1 sale, NYX won’t be taking international orders
– Processing your order can take up to 5 days
– All sale purchases are final. No returns/exchanges.

There’s always a catch, isn’t there? Now, some people have reported that the shipping costs were totally crazy. I am not sure why that is, because when I placed my order my shipping was really reasonable at around $7 and change. NYX is headquartered in California, so I know that when my order does finish processing it will arrive over night. Worth the $7 completely.

Not sure what to grab? What got my attention:

– Foundations – Including their black label powder, which is usually a whopping $25. Unfortunately it’s only a few of the shades, but I was happy that it included the 2 most pale shades. <3 It seems the palest and the darkest shades are on sale. I really really hope this doesn’t mean they are going to discontinue them.

– Single Eyeshadows – A selection of shades from their huge eyeshadow collection are just $1. These shadows are high quality, comparable to MAC but very cheap! Now they’re even cheaper.

– False Eyelashes – Like many of you I’m sure, false lashes are only the stuff of experimentation for me. But for $1, I grabbed some to play with.

– Sponges Galore – All of NYX’s fabulous makeup & skin care sponges are just $1. I swear by the cellulose sponges for washing my face and would have grabbed some if I didn’t have a good sized stock pile already. I did grab some wedge sponges though because you need to toss those often so you can never have too many.

NYX Round Lipsticks – Color Accurate Photos

Here are some color accurate swatches of my NYX round lipsticks! I hope you benefit from them. :) NYX round lipsticks are available online at NYXCosmetics.com, CherryCulture.com, Nonpareilboutique.com and ShopCraze.

R to L: NYX Pandora, Powder, Jupiter

R to L: NYX Narcissus, squished Georgia, Rosebud

R to L: NYX Harmonica, Christie, Castle

NYX Louisiana, Paris

NYX Chloe, Gem, Medussa

Allergies!

Pesky allergies are keeping me from my makeup fetish right now. I just don’t have the motivation to deal with much in the way of makeup when I can’t even wear mascara without my eyes turning devilish red and puffing up.

As to the latest in makeup…I haven’t picked up any of the MAC Cremesheen or Ungaro collections. Frankly, Ungaro looks boring. And Cremesheen isn’t limited edition so I’m in no rush. But hey, it means free ship codes for all of you lovely people. That’s something to cheer about eh?

Speaking of shipping. I splurged a little on Cherry Culture’s free shipping weekend and ordered 10 NYX round lipsticks. At a dollar each I figured I could go a little nuts. I would normally never buy this many of anything at once. I now own 11 NYX lipsticks, haha. I have:

Paris (already had)
Chloe
Christie
Castle
Pandora
Medusa
Gem
Narcissus
Jupiter
Power
Louisiana

and I have more coming in swaps. Hooray! I do plan on taking pics and doing reviews asap. Sorry about the delay and my laziness, guys! I’ve been crazy busy with work and other stuff in my personal life and haven’t had time to keep this blog as updated as I would normally like!
