Alba Botanica Acai Shampoo & Conditioner

I always think about how it would be nice to use all natural products and be one with the earth and what have you, but the reality is for me, all natural hair products never seem to perform as well as good ole’ chemicals.

However, I am also madly in love with Alba Botanica. You may have seen me rave about their moisturizers (I have had and used 3 different ones and they’re ALL fabulous). They also make pretty amazing lip balm (get the coconut flavor).

When I found out about the new rainforest line of skin & hair products from Alba, I was immediately intrigued. “I need to try this,” I thought. The rainforest line is created from natural sustainable-source rainforest ingredients certified by the Rainforest Alliance. They also support the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. It just sounds fabulous.

The products I selected to try are the Acai Antioxidant Shampoo and Acai Antioxidant Conditioner. These two are designed for all hair types to help protect your hair from damage.
The Shampoo
The shampoo kind of weirded me out at first because it’s very liquidy. I was off put by that at first, though I don’t really know why. The first thing that stuck me was that it also smells really good. Like a fruit salad, according to Mr. Menagerie. Other ingredients besides the acai are jojoba oil and passion fruit oil, which nourish hair and make it soft and silky. Reading through the ingredients I also noticed it contains aloe vera and rice bran oil, as well as brazil nut oil. Don’t get me wrong though, all the oils are fine for someone who has oily scalp. It doesn’t exacerbate the problem at all. What you won’t find in the shampoo: parabens, sulfates, or silicones. My first impression on using it was that it didn’t foam up and lather as much as shampoos I’m used to on account of it lacking sulfates. However, it still cleaned my hair very well. I didn’t have that very dry, coarse feeling I often get after rinsing out a shampoo that doesn’t work with my hair.
The Conditioner
The conditioner is a more traditional looking product– a lot thicker and creamier than the shampoo. Because of this it’s a little hard to get it out of the bottle, haha. But not a big deal. I just store it upside down in my shower caddy to make it easier. Like the shampoo the conditioner contains acai, rice bran oil, and passion fruit oil, but also includes cocoa butter (fair trade) to further soften your hair. The aloe vera is also present in the conditioner (I love aloe. It’s wonderful for you.), as are olive oil, sunflower oil, and jojoba oil. So much goodness packed into this conditioner, it’s ridiculous. Anyway, Alba recommends applying it to your hair and letting it sit for a few minutes before rinsing, which I did.
The Results
This is definitely the best pair of natural hair products I’ve used to date. My hair feels silky, soft, and not weighed down at all (which is important since while I have a lot of hair, it’s actually very fine and easily weighed down). I have very dry hair right now, so I still need additional moisture, but I can see this being all I need once my hair is in better condition. I love that these products are accessible (Alba is sold in many chain stores nationwide such as Target, CVS, etc. as well as online) and affordable. Each product is 8 oz and $9.95 apiece. I definitely want to try other things from the rainforest line, including their deep hydration shampoo and conditioner, which is probably best for my hairtype right now.
