April 2013 Julep Maven Box – It Girl

The April theme for Julep Maven boxes was brights, and boy did they deliver. I opted for the It Girl box this month and also added on the color Lena and the Rock Candy Glaze in Candy. The It Girl box included some actual rock candy in it, too. Cute touch. :)

The colors included in the It Girl box were Abbie, Eden, and Mackenzie.

Abbie is a very bright sunshine yellow creme. For a yellow polish this has a magnificent formula. Pictured here is 2 coats. It’s very opaque and smooth.

Eden was a bitch to photograph. It looks like your garden variety royal blue in this photo, but it’s actually quite a bit more purple than my camera was able to capture. It’s more of a “blurple” if you will. Julep describes it as “bright violet creme”. Bright is an understatement. The pigmentation of this color is just insane.

Mackenzie is a mid-tone grassy green with slight golden shimmer. It’s way less shimmery than say, Zoya Midori, but in the same color family. The shimmer is extremely subtle, but keeps the color from looking flat. Julep describes this as a frost finish, but it’s somewhere in between frost and creme in my view.

The formula on all three of these was perfect. All of the swatches have 2 coats. Eden might be a 1-coater on some of you. Mackenzie could be if you wanted a sheerer effect. Abbie really needs 2 coats to cover any slight streaking that happens with the first coat. It’s by far and away one of the best yellows I’ve ever used though.

My add-on color is Lena, which you can see here…

When it comes to a teal polish, I almost literally can’t help myself. Lena was part of the Boho Glam box, but I had to have that color too. My swatch is kinda rushed and poorly done so it looks kinda streaky, but the formula on this color is just as nice as her sisters. It’s that same in between frost and creme finish as Mackenzie with a very slight shimmer to it.

I also added on Candy, which is part of their new Rock Candy Glaze line. Currently these are not available on the Julep site, and this particular color isn’t available on Sephora. Sephora has 4 other colors that are all listed as exclusive and limited edition. So if the nail gloss thing is something you’re into, you should check those out this week when Sephora’s VIB/BI sale happens. ;) ANYWAY, Candy is a dark purple, but since it’s this glaze formula it’s extremely sheer…

From right to left – 1 coat, 2 coats, 3 coats, and a syrup/gradient nail.

I think this would look so cute over pink or purple for a gradient nail!! I think Zoya perhaps may have them beat in the formula of this type of polish, because with just one coat you can barely even tell there’s anything there, but this is so fun to play with and create cool looks for spring and summer. The syrup manicure nail reminds me of candy or popsicles.
